Please sign the online petition to encourage our new State to rethink the plans for the Powerhouse Museum. The main grievances and petitions are:

1. Stop the $500 million destruction of the State Heritage listed Wran Building

2. Save the Ultimo Harwood building and have it State Heritage listed

3. Not destroy the world-class hall of industry and aviation

4. Not destroy the forecourt onto Harris Street, Ultimo

5. Employ more curators and qualified staff as per previous staffing levels

6. Scrap the $800 million plan for a museum on the Parramatta flood plain

7. Not turn a storage facility in Castle Hill (35km from the Sydney CBD) into a quasi museum

8. Castle Hill has limited public transport, no other tourism drawcard or facilities.

10. Most importantly we want a permanent display of Australian decorative arts on the Ultimo site.

In contrast to Featherston’s egalitarian, commercially produced designs, in the same period Melbourne - based cabinet maker Schulim Krimper produced finely handcrafted, custom furniture in the modern style. His virtuosity was recognised in 1948 when the National Gallery of Victoria acquired two of his cabinets, and followed with a major exhibition in 1959.

Mid-century Melbourne couturier Robert Fritzlaff designed this ‘going away’ dress in 1964, two years after he had won the prestigious Australian fashion award Gown of the Year, for a dress also embroidered by Dutch embroidery designer Nellie van Rijsoort.

Etched cameo glass

This exquisite etched cameo glass bowl by French artist Emile Galle sees Eucalyptus cassia or Silver Princess - translated into the art nouveau style.
Galle was a leading proponent of the
French art nouveau movement, and his formal studies in botany and drawing resulted in highly original glass designs that often celebrated the natural world.

The World’s Fair exhibitions throughout the 19th century, and into the 20th, exposed massive audiences to both internationalism as well as localised modes of production in the decorative arts and other mediums. International audiences experienced the works of Australian artists Tom Roberts and Ellis Rowan at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1886, which attracted 5.5 million visitors.

Australiana: Designing a Nation surveys the iconography of Australiana in art and design through key chapters in our history through to the present day, identifying a distinct tradition that has reflected - and changed with - popular notions of Australian identity and style. Encompassing the rich expressions of culture and connection to Country of First Nations artists and designers, to explorations of national and personal identity by others, Australiana illuminates a local vernacular. Through the use of native materials and motifs, playful remixes of popular culture, and incisive reflections on nationalistic sentiment the visual language of Australiana celebrates - and interrogates-who we are.

Curated by and presented exclusively at Bendigo Art Gallery in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, this expansive exhibition showcases works by over 200 artists and designers, including many Australian masterpieces. Spanning the visual and decorative arts as well as photography, illustration, furniture, jewellery, moving image and fashion, this exhibition charts Australia’s social and popular cultural history. Designed by John Sulman and the first Anglican Bishop of Riverina, Sydney Linton.
An extraordinary 1888 iron house.
The technology in the design is still evident today. Deep low verandahs, air vents, low double hung window sills to increase air flow. Use of iron exterior walls and zinc-coated tin plate interior. The cavity of the walls are rammed with native Cyprus saw dust for insulation and termite resistance. Raised ventilation ridging on the hips and ridges of the roof for ventilation. Most wonderful heritage garden with an extensive collection of roses, Schinus molle (Pepper corn trees) and an exceptional and the largest Araucaria Cunninghamii (Hoop Pines) you will ever see.
Owned by the Hay Shire Council.

Australia 1880 - 1955
Vase with pastoral design of dancing figures by Sydney Long 1909. Hand painted porcelain with over-glaze decoration. Mildred Lovett’s vase demonstrates the arts and craft movement’s ideal of an exchange between painting and the decorative arts. She based her composition on a 1909 painting by Sydney Long called Pastorale which was destroyed, but subsequently reprised by Long in Fantasy c1916-17 (on display behind this vase). While aligned, painting and vase vary according to the distinctions of their mediums. The painting’s flattened art nouveau patterns are beautifully transcribed by Lovett in the rhythmic rise of the vases curved form.

A collection of 82 Australian timber samples carve

A collection of 82 Australian timber samples carved to look like ‘reference books’. Each volume has a simulated ‘book spine’ with the scientific ‘Latin’ name of the timber and the botanist who named it on an embossed red leather panel and lower on the spine is a black leather panel with ‘Australia’ embossed on it. The common name for the timber is carved into the front cover.

The staff were extremely accomodating and their furniture conservator Greg, was on hand to help us examine many of the important Australian items of furniture, objects and pictures up close. As part of our three day tour of Braidwood, Canber

As part of our three day tour of Braidwood, Canberra and Yass
we visited Bedervale for 4 hours which included afternoon drinks,
delicious locally produced food and wonderful country hospitality. We had ample opportunity to explore the property and examine at length architectural elements and furnishings. Thank you to Margaret Royds, daughter Sonia Horan, Mark Horan, Charlie Horan and Bedervale volunteers for making this such a wonderful afternoon. We are looking forward to stronger ties and joint opportunities in the future. Margaret and Roger Royds bought Bedervale in 1972 and through their family such as Sonia and Mark have worked tirelessly through extreme conditions to repair and maintain the collection and buildings. The final photo depicts matriarch Margaret Royds, Ian Stephenson curator and Sonia Horan current owner.

As a part of our three day tour of Canberra, Braid

As a part of our three day tour of Canberra, Braidwood and Yass we visited an 1830’s property with an extraordinary history and many fascinating architectural elements including a convict cut and stone-lined water course that runs from a creek in the hills to the back of the home and out buildings. Some of our members were driven from the main road up to the house while the rest marched with anticipation up the hill like ants in anticipation of fine food, a magnificent home and an exceptional collection. A wonderful day and very generous hosts.

Last night we held the Australiana cocktail party at the Hotel Realm Canberra to greet 40 members who are participating in our 3 day tour. The tour takes in historic properties in Braidwood, Canberra and Yass. We will be learning about local history, examining furniture, paintings, pottery, silver, textiles and exploring local museums and private galleries. Today we are led by 2 curators and an Australian expert in timbers & cabinet making.

A range of First Nations parrying shields or drunm

A range of First Nations parrying shields or drunmung, “to ward off or block” on display in a mass installation with a range of 19th century broad shields. Due to their age and use the Australian timbers have mellowed beautifully. Many have intricately carved geometric patterns and have been enhanced further by using earth, crushed stone mixed with water and rubbed into the surface to enhance the subtle beauty of the carved patterns. Each design was
possibly emblematic of the tribal group
who designed them.

During the interwar period Margaret Preston was the leading advocate of Modernism in Sydney. She argued that Australian artists should find knowledge closer to home, from both indigenous and Asian cultures. Preston travelled widely throughout Asia and Australia and published numerous articles on Aboriginal art from the 1920s to the 1940s, endeavouring to promote a truly distinctive national style. In 1938 Preston completed ten paintings of Australian flora. Six were included at the New York World Fair in April 1939, and another four, including Flannel flower, 1938, were exhibited at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco later in the year. Alan Townsend is a mural archaeologist, heritage consultant, heritage wallpaper specialist & artisan.
Members of Australiana recently joined the National Trust of Tasmania on a tour of the Bothwell region. We visited the heritage listed 1830 / 50’s suite of timber and stone buildings known as White’s Store in Bothwell.
Alan Townsend through archaeological research is able to recreate by hand wallpapers from remnants found on site.
1. Hand made screen printed wallpapers recreated from archaeological evidence and researching archives.
2. White’s Store Bothwell now his headquarters for the wallpaper operation.
3. Alan providing a demonstration and explanation for the screen printing process.
4. Sample of remnant paper recently discovered at various properties.
5. Every wallpaper has multiple screen prints to recreate the final paper.
6. Samples of wallpapers recreated. The last paper on the right was recreated from papers found at the National Trust Tasmania property, Runnymede, in Hobart.
7. Wallpaper at Runnymede, dining room, the final result.
