AUSTRALIANA SOCIETY MARCH TOUR (TEST)

CANBERRA – BRAIDWOOD – YASS

17th – 20th March 2023

Dear member,

There is still a small number of available places for financial members on our upcoming tour.  It has taken the organising committee a great deal of time to put together but we think that what we have been able to organise will be of great interest. We will be based in Canberra, spending a day in the historic Braidwood area, a day in Canberra and a day in Yass/Harden.

Friday 17th March 6pm Welcome drinks and canapes at the Brassey Hotel.

Saturday 18th March By bus to Braidwood to visit two historic properties. The first home dates from 1828 and has been owned by the current owners for just over two years. Members will see a very interesting house under restoration, a wonderful collection of antique furniture and decorative arts (including Australian colonial) and a surprise collection of vintage cars.

We will then return to Braidwood to meet custodians of the Braidwood Museum (in a very early building). There is an interesting collection to see. We will also make a quick tour (by bus) of other historic buildings before going to Bedervale on the periphery of the town. This 1836 property was substantially designed by colonial architect John Verge. It is a working property and has a significant collection of colonial furniture and art collection. There is much to see and appreciate as some items have been in the house since the 1830s. We will have early dinner on the lawn.

Sunday 19th March We will be staying in Canberra and visiting Government House to see its collection of furniture and decorative arts, ostensibly collected by the Australiana Fund over many years. We will also be visiting Calthorpe’s House, now a house museum and its intact collection of original furnishings from the 1920s. We will also visit the workshop of one of our members where we will see the furniture restoration work he is currently undertaking.

In the evening the annual Kevin Fahy lecture and dinner will be held at the Brassey Hotel. The lecture will be given by Professor Nicholas Brown School of History (ANU).

Monday 20th March We will be travelling to Garangula, a private museum near Harden to view a significant collection of contemporary Aboriginal art and other items. This is housed in an award winning building but is not open to the public.

We will return to Yass to the interesting National Trust property Cooma Cottage (1830-37), first home of explorer Hamilton Hume. We then return to Canberra by approximately 5pm.

The itinerary is confirmed but as you know may also be subject to last minute changes. You may wish to stay an extra night or two to visit the galleries and other Canberra attractions.

Tour members will need to arrange their own transport to and from Canberra. Over the three days (to keep the group together and not get lost) we will travel by bus from the Brassey Hotel to the various locations.
